Remember when the 900 monster was considered cool, fast, and plenty powerful for a Hooligan street bike? The new 800's somehow are not given the cred the older 900 had. The extra torque of the 10 is just extra. The old carb 900's were approx 72rwhp before mods. If I am in no hurry and don't mind traveling the east coast, could I find one almost showroom? Seems like they are rarely listed here.Ĭlick to expand.Folks forget that the 'new' 800 and 796 have just over 70 Hp. But, I can find a lot of 800ss's in perfect order with almost no miles in my area. So, what should I get? I'm leaning toward the 1000DS and other threads suggest it. I'm not a literbike guy by any means so I'm talking a quick bike not a monster. I'm looking to buy a bike in great shape and keep it forever, so I don't mind something that will require upgrades but I want something with enough power to suit me. Seems like the 800 is comparable and the 1000 will eat it up. I also want a bike that's as fast or faster than my SV. I assume it's better than the stock Ohlins on the 1000. I could put an Ohlins aftermarket shock in it too.
I don't mind getting an SS with nonadjustable suspension as long as I know I can fix it fairly cheaply (Racetech goldvalves and springs?) The Axxion setups cost quite a bit and I'd rather avoid that route. I really want a 2003 SS 800 or the 1000DS because of the stock suspension. Problem is I'm fallen in love with the look of the Ducati Supersport.
